Hands-on Puja for Devi Sarasvati on Sunday, Oct 6

by Balkee Balakrishnan - October 5, 2019

Dear parents,

(This is going to all families — copy to teachers).

This is Padma.

More information will be forthcoming, especially for families that joined this year, who would be unfamiliar with the puja proceedings.

As mentioned in the orientation, we plan to conduct two hands-on pujas this year.

This Sunday, Oct 6, we will do a puja to Devi Sarasvati.  Please come in early and have your child SEATED by 9:45.

As we did last year (and some of it was explained in the orientation a few weeks ago), these are things to keep in mind:

  • Murti (or Image or framed picture) and utensils:  Please bring these for your child(ren), preferably one set for each of your children. We assume that by now all of you would have seen the pictures of the puja materials needed on the Registered Families’ page of the web site.  If you don’t have exactly what is shown, you can use your discretion and substitute, but avoid styrofoam and paper cups (unstable) and avoid utensils used in the kitchen to cook, eat, drink, etc.  The murti should be small enough to fit in the plate.  A small frame like 3.5 x 5 (or less) will do fine.
  • Flowers: Please bring flowers for your child in a ZIPLOC bag.  If possible, please also bring flowers to share. The flowers to share will be collected by volunteers into a common pool and be distributed to whoever needs it.

If you are buying, please cut off the stems.

  • Bell: If you have a puja bell, feel free to bring it.
  • Chandan, kumkum, rice and water:  There is no need to bring these.  Therefore, no need to bring the little cups for the chandan and kumkum (shown as optional on the web site) either. Howeverplease do smear the chandan and dab the kumkum on the forehead of the murti, as well as on four places around the body of the pancapatram at home.
  • Dress code: Traditional Indian clothes for all children.  On their foreheads, girls need to have bindi and boys either chandan/vibhuti for boys.  Girls need to tie up their hair or braid it (i.e., their hair should not be hanging down)

Thank you.

Warm regards,

Padma
